Welcome to 2014 in Room 19

Our new blog for 2014 will be up soon, meanwhile, here is some information that you will need to get prepared for next Monday.

Stationery

I have been busy organising the classroom and I am looking forward to you coming back to school. Hopefully you will all have your stationery ready for the first day. Everyone will be using their own equipment so please name all stationery - including glue sticks, pens and pencils  It is very difficult to track down missing items when they are not named.
Book coverings like duraseal are handy to help make books more identifiable and harder wearing, but this is not essential.
Below is a list of what your books will be used for. Please write this on the front cover of each book underneath your name.

Elfie the Elf

On Monday, a special parcel arrived. Inside was a box with a letter from Santa. Inside the box was an elf we named Elfie. Elfie's job is to report back to Santa each night on who has been good, then he comes back to Room 19 ready for the next day.

This morning when we arrived, we found all the birthday party poppers had been popped and were all over the floor, Elfie was up on top of the Christmas tree, and Robot was trapped inside the box! Poor Robot - he did not look happy. We wondered how he got Robot into the box.

When we arrived on Wednesday morning, Elfie was trapped inside the sock puppet box and Robot, Sid, Bert and all the puppets were keeping guard. We think it was Robot's revenge. We hope they are going to be better friends tonight.

When we arrived at school on Thursday, Elfie was sitting on top of Sid, who was on top of the whiteboard elf. It looked like they had been flying around the classroom most of the night together. We are glad they are all friends now.

We had lots of questions for Elfie, so we wrote them on the board. When we arrived at school on Friday we found Elfie peeping out from behind the whiteboard. The classroom was a terrible mess with glittery foil all over the floor and the chairs and the shelves!!!! He had answered all our questions though.

We have lots more questions to ask, so Mrs D has written them up on the board too. We had so many, we ran out of room!

Athletics Day, Swimming & Kittens

Another very busy week in Room 19. Early in the week, Ruby brought her kittens in to see us. They are very cute and playful.

We also started swimming in our pool. It was wonderful to see how confident the children are in the water now. I was also impressed at how they are able to organise themselves and manage their gear.

Some wonderful children also received certificates at our assemblies in week 7 and week 8. Noah and Neo were awarded the Heart of Achievement certificates, Aakifah, Matthias, Brooke M and Hasini received the Values and Achievment certificates, and Coco, Holly, Noah and Riley earned stickers in their reading books.

On Athletics Day, both our relay teams put in a great effort. They had all worked hard on their fitness and on the all important baton changes. It was great to see their determination in the race. The girls finished second and the boys finished first. The boys then had the opportunity to compete against the parents who had to work very hard for their win. I wonder what the result will be next year?

What is happening in Week 8?

Swimming
Yay! We can use our school pool again. Thank you to all the helpers who made this possible. All children must bring their named swimming gear every day until the end of term. We are very lucky to have a heated pool and these lessons are an important part of our Physical Education classes. If for any reason your child cannot attend, please provide them with a note from home stating why.
·      Togs
·      Towel
·      Goggles (if required)
·      Swimming bag or other sturdy waterproof bag.

Year 2/3 Athletics Day – Thursday 5/12
 (Fingers crossed for better weather)
The children will need to:
·      wear house colour sports
  clothes (t shirt and shorts)
·      wear a sweat shirt if it is cold
·      wear a hat
·      have sunscreen applied before
  school
·      wear running shoes and socks
·      bring a big lunch and a full
  water bottle (named)
The children will be in groups based on their age as of 1 October and will move around the events together. These are the groups that were written on their arm for last week’s practice. You are welcome to come along to the event.  There will be seven events: sprints, middle distance, shot put, discus, hurdles and high jump. There will be five rotations before lunch and two after lunch followed by the relays - including the popular parent relay. Remember to bring your running shoes! You are welcome to stay at school and have lunch with your child.

How to turn your teacher into a dragon

This week we have been writing some instructions on how to turn Mrs D into a dragon ... and it worked!!!!

We used adjectives and bossy verbs to create our recipes. Check out this wonderful writing.

Furry visitors

Today Brooke brought their guinea pigs into the classroom for a visit. We loved the burbling noises they made to communicate with each other.
