Our Statistical Investigation - Lolly Scramble
Over the last two weeks we have been learning about statistics. We used tally graphs and pictographs to investigate our birthdays, the colour of our eyes, how we came to school and our Smarts.
Our class investigation was looking at the different lollies in the Pascall Lolly Scramble packets. First we completed a tally chart and a pictograph for a sample packet then we made statements based on our data.
- There is only 1 Orange Fruit Burst.
- There are 3 each of the Green, Purple and Red Fruit Bursts.
- There were more Milkshakes than any other type of lolly.
- There are fewer Minties than pink caramels.
- There were no Yellow Fruit Bursts! Brooke M pointed out that there was a picture on the packet showing the Yellow Fruit Bursts and it was not right that there were none inside.
Use the photo below to make up some of your own statements.
We decided to look at some more packets in our groups to see if there were similar problems with the mix of lollies. Each group completed their own tally chart and bar graph. Then we combined this on one column graph using Excel to show what we found out. The Circles data is red, the Triangles is yellow and the Octagons is green. We found out some interesting things and made some more statements based on the data.
- Three packets had one type of lolly missing.
- Four of the three packets had 30 lollies, but one packet had only 29.
- Milkshakes were the most common lolly in most of the packets.
We think that there should be the same number of each type of lolly in the packets and that maybe the machine that fills the packets is broken. Our next step is to write to Pascalls. We will include a copy of our graph.
T1W7 Update
This week's assembly was hosted by Room 7. We really enjoyed listening to their play about the Ugly Duckling.
Congratulations to Noah, Lexie and Rosa who received certificates for Achievement, Values and Heart of Achievement.
Well done to Brooke M who has received her '25' sticker in reading and to Matthias and Coco who have met their goals for Basic Facts.
Great work everyone.
Neo is off to Japan for a few weeks - have a wonderful time Neo, we will miss you and look forward to hearing about your adventures when you return.
We ended the day on Friday by joining the Senior school in a Jump Jam session. Mrs Warren led the Dance Off competition between the boys and the girls. What a great way to end the week.
Remember it is the Easter break next week and school will be closed on Friday, and also on Monday and Tuesday of the following week.

Keeping Ourselves Safe
Today we started learning about the importance of Keeping Ourselves Safe. We discussed the need to know our addresses and phone numbers and what to do if we got lost at the mall or a park. We watched a video clip from Bryan and Bobby. They have a show on TV which is full of good advice on how to Keep Ourselves safe. You can watch some of these clips by clicking on the link below.
Personal details like our addresses and phone numbers is also confidential and should never be written on the outside of our bags, and definitely not shared online. Hectors World has some video clips and activities that you might like to use at home for discussion. The link to the full site is on the sidebar, the direct link to the clip on keeping your personal details private is below. Click on the link, enter the theatre, click on the 'Now Showing' book and choose the Personal Information then Details, details.

The Reading Crusade
Today we went and listened to Zac, a librarian from the Shirley Public Library talk about the Reading Crusade. A notice, voucher and a log have been sent home with your child today.
The books they can add to their Reading Crusade Log from today are shown below. Wow - that is half of one entry already. I think I will have to add 'The Three Bears - sort of' to my collection of favourite books.
The Cat that Scratched - by Jonathan Long & Korky Paul
The Three Bears - Sort of by Yvonne Morrison

Swimming Week starts 11th March
This week we will be going swimming at Aquagym EVERY DAY. We will be leaving school at 11:30am and arriving back around 1:00pm. This is a very good time to check that all clothing items are named. It makes it very difficult in the changing rooms if we have to track down mislaid items when they are not named.
Please make sure you bring with you every day:
- Your togs - named.
- A dry towel - named.
- Swimming goggles if you need them - named and adjusted so they are ready to use.
- A large, strong plastic bag or swimming bag. The bag must be able to fit in all your clothes and shoes once you are changed. Please note that plastic supermarket bags are not strong enough, durable enough or big enough to do the job.
Remember Mrs Simmon's challenge! If we can make it through the week without losing any clothing, we will have a special lunch the week after. I know you can do it!
Term 1 Week 5 Update
Congratulations to Ruby who won the competition with 21 correct answers out of 23. Nametags have now been affixed to the clues. Well done everyone who entered - it was a tricky challenge.
Assembly
On Friday, Room 19 hosted the Year 2 Assembly. We showed our pencil holders and chose our favourite songs to sing - Count on Me and Bad Hair Day. Our presenters did a great job and we had lots of proud parents attending. We were very surprised to receive Sam Bear for the second time this term. He was very impressed with our tidy room at pack up time. The prize draws were won by Matthias (Clip'N'Climb voucher) and Vianca (Ball). Congratulations to James, Coco and Ruby who received certificates. Keep up the fantastic work.

Term 1 Week 4 Update
Congratulations to Neo and Thomas R who received the Values and Academic certificates at the Year 2 Assembly on Friday. Keep up the great work guys.
During lunchtime there was great excitement in Room 19. Our butterfly hatched out! Word spread very quickly and there were many interested observers as the butterfly emerged and inflated its wings. At the end of the day it was taken outside to the big wide world. We hope it visits our butterfly garden before heading off.
